Energy Today: Challenges and Prospects for the Future

The Power & Energy Society (PES) Chapter of IEEE NTUA SB, with the support of IEEE Greece Young Professionals, is hosting an event called "Energy Today: Challenges and Prospects for the Future." This event is aimed at discussing the current developments in the energy sector, coinciding with PES Day 2023. The event will take place on Tuesday, May 2nd, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Amphitheater in the NTUA Central Computer System Building. The event will begin with a brief welcome and presentation of the PES Chapter and its activities. Professor C. Vournas, the Chair of PES Greece, will also address the audience. The event will feature two distinct sections. In the first section, two experts in the field from Schneider-Electric will deliver technical presentations. Alexandros Ntalagiannis, Product Application Engineer, will speak on the following topics: "Closer to the Era of E-mobility" and "The Solution to the Energy Crisis Goes by the Name Microgrid". Penny Kokkini, Application Engineer, will present on the topic of "Smart and Green Buildings." The second section of the event will feature a panel discussion with our school's professors - Prof. Hatziargyriou, Prof. Papathanassiou and Prof. Papavasiliou- who will discuss topics such as energy efficiency, renewable energy penetration, energy storage, as well as the capacity and adequacy of the Greek network. Finally, the event will conclude with a networking session and snacks, during which attendees will learn more about the activities of the PES Chapter of IEEE NTUA SB, IEEE Greece Young Professionals, and Schneider Electric. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Power and Engineering Society(PES) day is an annual event organized by the PES, a non-profit organization driven by volunteers worldwide to educate society by providing scientific and engineering information on electrical power and energy for the betterment of society. PES Day 2023 is conducted with the theme “Powering a Climate Safer Future” with hopes of taking action to save the world from worsening changes in the climate. Webinar on the Role of Renewable Energy in Achieving Sustainability

IEEE SB in association with IEEE PES SBC and IEEE had presented a webinar on the topic “The Role of Renewable Energy in Achieving Sustainability” on the occasion of IEEE PES Day Celebration 2023 on 10.04.2023 This webinar was lectured by Mr. Bahaaldeen Mohammed, he received the B.Eng in Electrical Engineering (Electrical Power) in 2019 from Alzaiem Alazhari University, Khartoum, Sudan. He is currently a M. Tech Student in Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, India (Power System Engineering). Participants learned about the outline of Renewable Energy's role in Achieving Sustainability and its general uses. Also, the speaker cleared the participant’s queries with a brief explanation. Almost 35 participants attended. The Student Coordinators Sushmitha, Reshma and Narmadha coordinated the event along with staff coordinator Mr. M. Arun, AP/ECE and Dr.M. P. Chitra, HOD/ECE.

Sustainable Energy Summit (SES)

Coloring a Climate Safer Future

In celebration of PES Day 2023, IEEE NSU PES SBC is organizing an ‘Art Competition’ titled "Coloring a Climate Safer Future" at Ma Haad School on 7th May 2023. With the PES DAY 2023 Theme "Powering a Climate Safer Future," this event is aimed to engage young children in the importance of sustainable energy and creating awareness on climate change. As part of the event, this art competition will be held for kids from playgroups to class 1 and encourage them to express their ideas and creativity on this important topic. This event will provide a platform for children to showcase their talent and express their thoughts on the importance of clean energy and its role in creating a safer and more sustainable future for our planet. The event will also include fun activities and games related to energy conservation and sustainability to engage the kids in a fun and interactive way. Overall, PES RES for Kids will be an excellent opportunity for children to learn about sustainable energy and become environmentally conscious at a young age. The event is open to all children, and we look forward to seeing their enthusiastic participation.

Awareness of Renewable Energy Sources for School Kids

The event agendas are as follows:  First, give a presentation on renewable energy resources available around us by IEEE Volunteers (Max. 30-40 minutes)  After that question-and-answer session (Max. 10 minutes)  After that IEEE volunteers provide stationery items (such as Pencil, Color, Drawing sheet, Sharpener, Eraser, Scale and etc.) to kids for the drawing diagram of renewable energy sources as per shows in the presentation (Max. 30-40 minutes)  Once kids complete the drawing then IEEE volunteers will collect the drawing sheets from the kids (Max. 2 minutes)  Then drawing sheets will evaluate by the senior IEEE members and give 1st, 2nd and 3rd ranks based on the drawing performance by kids.  IEEE Volunteers give prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd ranks kids.  For the remaining kids, we will give some gift  Finally, conclude the event with feedback from the kids (Max. 10 minutes).

Power & Energy Technology’s Impact on Climate Change.

The use of technology has undoubtedly made our lives easier and more connected. However, over-reliance on technology also contributes to climate change in several ways. Here are some of the most significant negative impacts of technology on climate change: 1. E-waste: Technology creates a lot of electronic waste (e-waste) when people dispose of outdated, unused, or broken devices. This waste contains hazardous substances like lead, cadmium, and mercury, which can pollute soil and water, harming the environment and human health. 2. Energy consumption: Modern technology requires large amounts of energy to operate, mainly from non-renewable sources such as coal and natural gas. This energy consumption results in increased greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to climate change. 3. Carbon footprint: Technology companies are notorious for their high carbon footprint, mainly due to the energyintensive manufacturing and production processes of electronic devices. Additionally, data centers and servers that support cloud services consume huge amounts of electricity, significantly contributing to CO2 emissions. 4. Air pollution: Technology involves burning fossil fuels, which releases air pollutants that can harm air quality and contribute to acid rain, smog, and other environmental problems. 5. Over-consumption: Technology has made it easier for people to buy more goods and services, leading to overconsumption and waste. For example, online shopping has led to increased demand for shipping and transportation, resulting in more emissions and energy consumption. 6. Depreciation of nature: The heavy use of technology has led to the depersonalization of nature. People spend more time engaging with technology than with nature, leading to a reduction in the value placed on the environment and the biodiversity it sustains. In conclusion, while technology has brought numerous benefits to society, its overuse contributes significantly to climate change. Therefore, it is essential to use technology responsibly and prioritize environmentally-friendly alternatives. Technology can have both positive and negative effects on climate change. On the negative side, technology can contribute to climate change by emitting harmful gases, increasing energy consumption, and accelerating deforestation. However, there are several ways to avoid the negative impact of technology on climate change, such as: 1. Renewable energy sources: Switching to renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prevent the depletion of fossil fuels. 2. Energy-efficient technologies: Using energy-efficient technologies such as LED light bulbs, smart thermostats, and energy-efficient appliances can reduce energy consumption and curb emissions. 3. Green transportation: Opting for electric or hybrid vehicles, using public transport, or cycling can reduce emissions caused by transportation. 4. Sustainable agriculture: Adopting sustainable agriculture practices such as crop rotation, organic farming, and using natural fertilizers can reduce the impact of farming on the environment. 5. Sustainable building design: Incorporating green building practices such as using sustainable building materials, designing energy-efficient buildings, and using renewable energy sources can help reduce the carbon footprint of buildings. 6. Carbon capture and storage: Utilizing carbon capture and storage technologies can help capture and store carbon dioxide emissions from industrial processes before they are released into the atmosphere. 7. Planting trees: Planting trees can help absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Overall, technology can have a significant impact on climate change, but by adopting sustainable practices and utilizing clean and green technologies, we can help mitigate the negative impact of technology on the environment
